Beach Bums Strike Gold

Jen and Brian got a little getaway in Florida when Brian was giving a talk in Naples.

There were a lot of new things. For example, a restaurant that had hundreds of different kinds of salt. Weird.

But the highlight was Venice Beach. It looks like a normal beach, right? Except that there are a lot of people digging in the ground. Hm.

When you look closer at the rock the beach is built on, you see that it is saturated with fossils.

The result is that, especially after a big storm, there are many ancient shells and other fossils -- particularly sharks' teeth -- to discover. Jen and I spent a few hours and found dozens of them.

When the kids woke up after we got home, they found these tubs on the floor in the kitchen!

And what do you know? Each tub had dozens of cool shells and sharks' teeth to dig up! Well, I guess that's as good as we're going to get in Pittsburgh.
